A lot of poor reception is blamed on the wrong part. The good news is that most reception problems can be improved without turning the whole installation upside down.

The aerial does the heavy lifting. You can have a capable radio in the cab, but if the aerial is too short, badly mounted or poorly tuned, reception will always be compromised. On CB, transmit and receive performance are closely linked, so if the aerial system is poor on one side, it is usually poor on the other as well.

For mobile use, placement matters more than many realise. A roof-mounted aerial generally gives a better all-round signal than one fixed low down on a bumper, mirror bracket or rear corner. Height helps, and so does keeping the aerial in the clear. If large parts of the vehicle body sit around it, they can shield signals from certain directions.

That does not mean every vehicle can take a centre-roof mount. On a 4×4, van or work vehicle, practicality often decides the position. If a roof mount is not possible, aim for the highest, most open location you can manage. A rear body mount may be convenient, but it often gives less balanced performance than a higher mounting point.

Aerial length also makes a difference. In general, a longer CB aerial tends to hear better than a very short loaded one. A poor SWR reading can point to several issues. The aerial may need adjusting, the mount may not be earthing properly, the coax could be damaged, or a connector may be badly fitted. On magnetic mounts, even the location on the roof can alter the reading. On body mounts, paint, powder coating or corrosion can affect the ground connection.

Do not assume a newly fitted aerial is correct straight from the box. Even good equipment needs setting up on the vehicle it is actually being used on. The shape of the bodywork, where the mount sits, and the route of the cable all influence the final result.

Bad coax and connectors cause more trouble than people think

Coaxial cable is often ignored because it looks simple. In practice, it is a common source of weak or noisy reception. A cable trapped in a door seal, kinked tightly, rubbed through on metalwork or filled with water can all drag performance down.

PL plugs and mount connections deserve a close look too. A loose plug, poor soldering, or corrosion at the mount can create losses and intermittent faults that sound like fading stations or bursts of static. If the installation is older, inspecting the full cable run is worth the time.

Reduce electrical interference in the vehicle

Many reception complaints are not about weak signal at all. They are about noise. Modern vehicles can be very noisy electrically, and even older 4x4s can produce plenty of hash from ignition systems, LED lighting, chargers, inverters and other accessories.

If the noise changes with engine speed, you are likely hearing interference generated by the vehicle. If it appears when certain accessories are switched on, that narrows the fault further. Cheap USB chargers, dash cams, LED light bars and poorly suppressed power supplies are regular offenders.

Start by powering the radio correctly. A direct fused feed from the battery often gives cleaner results than tapping into an existing accessory circuit. Good negative return paths matter as much as the positive supply. Loose earths can make noise worse and cause unstable performance.

You can also test the radio with the engine off. If reception improves dramatically, the set is probably fine and the issue is interference rather than radio sensitivity. Ferrite chokes, better routing of power leads, and replacing noisy accessories can make a noticeable difference.

Squelch and RF gain need sensible adjustment

Terrain and conditions still matter
