For most UK 4×4 groups, a properly fitted CB, a well-matched aerial and a simple operating plan will do far more than a box full of expensive extras.

CB remains a sensible choice for green-laning days, off-road sites, road trips and local vehicle convoys because it gives the whole group a shared channel. Nobody needs mobile signal, an app account or a particular handset. Press the microphone, speak clearly, and everyone set to the same channel can hear the call.

Before relying on any installation, check the standing wave ratio (SWR). This confirms that the aerial system is reasonably matched to the radio and helps protect the transmitter. Do not assume a new aerial is tuned correctly straight from the packet. Mounting position, cable length and nearby metalwork all affect the result.

Mounting position changes the result

The highest practical aerial position usually gives the best all-round convoy coverage. A roof mount is often effective because the aerial has a clearer view in every direction. A rear body mount is popular on 4x4s because it is strong, accessible and less exposed to low branches than a roof whip, though the vehicle can block some signal towards the front.

Bonnet mounts and spare-wheel carrier mounts can work well, but they are compromises. They may be ideal where roof access is difficult or where a vehicle regularly enters height-restricted areas. The key is to understand the compromise rather than expecting every mounting position to perform identically.

Keep the coaxial cable away from sharp edges, moving hinges and excessive heat. Avoid tightly coiling unused cable into a small bundle behind the dashboard. Use proper connectors, protect any holes through metalwork with a grommet, and make sure the aerial mount remains mechanically secure. Off-road vibration finds loose fittings quickly.

Set rules before the wheels move

A convoy channel becomes useful when everyone uses it with a little discipline. Long conversations, music played into the microphone and constant calling make it harder for the person at the back to report a problem. Keep messages short, relevant and easy to understand.

CB range depends heavily on terrain, aerial installation, vehicle position and interference. On open ground, a group may communicate comfortably over several miles. In wooded valleys, dense urban areas, quarry sites or rolling countryside, range can drop sharply. Two vehicles only a short distance apart may struggle if a hill sits between them.

That is why convoy spacing matters. Keep the group close enough that each vehicle can normally hear the one ahead or behind. Do not use linear amplifiers as a substitute for a properly installed aerial and sensible spacing. Apart from legal considerations, extra power does not cure poor reception. If your radio can transmit further than it can hear, the convoy still has a communication problem.

Before setting off, take five minutes to check the radios. Make sure each set turns on, the chosen channel is correct, volume and squelch are set sensibly, and every aerial is firmly attached. Run a radio check with the vehicles spaced out slightly rather than parked in a tight row.

Then agree the working channel, backup channel, lead vehicle and tail vehicle. Confirm what the group will do if someone loses contact: usually stop safely, wait for the vehicle behind, and avoid reversing on a public road unless it is safe and necessary.
