A green lane convoy has turned off the tarmac, the lead vehicle is over the next rise, and mobile signal has disappeared. That is where the difference in CB radio versus network radio stops being a specification-sheet question. One system works directly from vehicle to vehicle; the other can put users many miles apart, but relies on an available mobile or Wi-Fi connection.

Neither is automatically the better choice. A CB set remains a practical bit of kit for local, independent communication, while network radios suit teams that need wide-area contact without learning radio frequencies or fitting a large aerial. The right answer depends on where you travel, who you need to speak to and what happens when coverage is poor.

CB radio versus network radio at a glance

CB radio uses licence-exempt Citizen Band frequencies and a dedicated aerial to send voice directly between compatible sets. In the UK, a compliant 27 MHz CB radio can be used without an individual licence. It does not need a SIM card, mobile mast, app or monthly service plan. Range varies with terrain, aerial choice, installation quality and local interference, but it is intended for short-range communication.

A network radio, often called a PTT over Cellular or PoC radio, looks and operates much like a two-way radio. Press the transmit button and speak. Why CB still earns its place in a vehicle

For 4×4 groups, road runs, recovery work around a site and convoy travel, CB does a job that mobile-based systems do not always replace. It lets nearby vehicles communicate immediately, with no account setup and no concern about whether everyone has installed the same app. When the group is moving through woodland, valleys, quarry tracks or remote lanes, that independence matters.

CB is also well suited to situations where the people you need to reach are physically close. A spotter can guide a driver over an obstacle. The rear vehicle can report a gate, issue a warning or confirm that the group is together. On the road, drivers can pass on traffic information or arrange a stop without picking up a phone.

A properly installed mobile CB setup is straightforward, but the aerial is not an optional extra. The radio, coaxial lead, mount, earth arrangement and antenna tuning all affect performance. A good radio with a poorly positioned or untuned aerial will disappoint. Conversely, a sensible aerial installation can make a modest CB setup very useful.

There is a social side as well. CB remains part of the 4×4, motoring and hobby radio scene because it is open and direct. You can call locally and speak to other users on the same channel, although busy channels and unwanted chatter are possible. That openness is useful for casual community contact, but it is not the same as a private team channel.

CB limitations to accept before buying

Do not buy CB expecting guaranteed coverage across a county. Hills, buildings, dense woodland and the distance between vehicles all have an effect. Aerial height and position can help, but cannot defeat the landscape. The legal power limits and permitted equipment rules also mean that performance should be approached realistically.

CB conversations are generally open for others on the channel to hear. It is not appropriate for sensitive business details, customer information or anything that requires privacy. Everyone in the group also needs a compatible CB set and a usable aerial installation, which may be less convenient than issuing compact handheld network radios.

Where network radio makes more sense

Network radio is built for dispersed teams. A transport operator with vehicles travelling around the UK can create a group and speak to all drivers at once, or contact an individual driver, without being limited by normal radio range. A site manager can speak to staff travelling between depots. Event teams can coordinate people in separate towns. For these jobs, the ability to communicate over distance is the main advantage.

Most network radios are simple to operate. They have a familiar push-to-talk button, loud speaker, battery and often a display, rather than requiring users to make a conventional phone call. Some models offer GPS location functions, emergency buttons, messaging and managed groups. These features can be useful for a fleet, particularly where a supervisor needs visibility of vehicles and quick contact with staff.

Installation can be easier, too. A handheld network radio needs charging and a data connection, not an external CB aerial and coax run. Vehicle-mounted options are available for a more permanent setup, but a business can often deploy handhelds quickly.

That convenience carries an ongoing cost. The device may need a SIM, a data allowance, a platform subscription or a managed service. Before choosing a system, establish exactly what is included: the hardware, SIM, network access, talk groups, mapping, administration and support. Cheap equipment can become expensive if the monthly arrangement is unclear.

Coverage is the deciding factor

A network radio is only as capable as the connection beneath it. In areas with strong 4G or 5G coverage, it can feel almost unlimited. In a mobile blackspot, it may have no more usefulness than a phone with no signal. Wi-Fi can provide another route indoors or at a depot, but it does not solve the problem on a remote track.

This is why network radio is not a complete substitute for CB on every off-road vehicle. If your main concern is keeping a convoy together beyond mobile coverage, direct radio is the safer primary method. If your main concern is coordinating drivers across the country, network radio is usually the more effective tool.

Choosing for 4x4s, fleets and hobby use

For a weekend 4×4 group, start with CB. It is purpose-suited to vehicle-to-vehicle communication and keeps working when the route takes you away from mobile masts. Choose a suitable aerial for the vehicle, use sound mounting and cable routing, and check the standing wave ratio before relying on it. A starter kit can remove much of the guesswork for a first installation.

For a lorry fleet, delivery operation or service business with vehicles spread over a broad area, network radio deserves serious consideration. It offers managed groups, wide-area calling and a familiar push-to-talk method without depending on each vehicle being within radio range of the next. Check real coverage on the roads and sites your staff actually use, not just a national coverage map.

For mixed use, carrying both can be the sensible answer. A CB radio handles the local convoy, recovery lane or rural section. A network radio handles contact with the office, a support vehicle or a driver far away. There is no rule saying one system must do every job.

Costs, reliability and practical ownership

CB usually has the higher upfront fitting requirement and lower ongoing cost. You need the radio, aerial, mount, cable, power connection and ideally an SWR meter or professional setup help. Once installed, there is no service subscription for ordinary use. It is a good fit for owners who value self-contained equipment and are happy to spend time getting the installation right.

Network radio often has lower setup effort but a recurring commitment. The equipment must be charged, accounts kept active and SIM or service arrangements maintained. It can be easier to manage across many staff members, but it introduces a dependence on both the provider and the mobile network.

Reliability is therefore not a single question. CB reliability comes from a sound installation, compatible equipment and realistic local range. Network radio reliability comes from device quality, battery management, service provision and mobile coverage. Consider the failure mode that matters most to you. If a mast outage or rural blackspot would leave a group unable to communicate, keep direct radio available.

Before buying, be clear about the conversations you need to have. If they are mostly between vehicles within sight or a few miles apart, a well-fitted CB is hard to beat.
