A 4×4 convoy disappears over the next ridge, the lane gets rougher and your mate’s signal starts fading. It is easy to think a linear amplifier is the obvious fix. But if you are asking are CB amplifiers legal UK, the useful answer is not simply whether one can be bought. It is whether it can lawfully be used with your CB set on the bands and power levels permitted in the UK.

For normal CB operation, fitting an external RF amplifier will almost always put the station outside the licence-exempt rules. That can turn a practical communications upgrade into a source of interference, complaints and possible Ofcom enforcement. Better range is possible, but it normally begins with the aerial system rather than more watts.

Are CB amplifiers legal in the UK?

A CB linear amplifier is not automatically illegal merely because it exists. Equipment may be sold, owned or used for purposes that do not involve transmitting on UK CB frequencies. The key issue is its use.

UK CB radio is licence-exempt only when the equipment and operation meet the relevant technical conditions. Those conditions include the permitted frequency bands, approved modes and maximum transmitter power. An external linear amplifier increases the output power of a CB radio beyond those limits, so the station no longer qualifies for licence-exempt operation.

An amplifier can also create unwanted emissions if it is driven too hard, poorly matched or connected to an unsuitable aerial system. The roof is usually the best place because the metal body provides a more even ground plane and the aerial is less shielded by the vehicle. A network radio, PMR solution, amateur radio where appropriately licensed, or a satellite-based option may be more suitable. Choosing the right tool is safer and more dependable than trying to force a CB station beyond its permitted operating conditions.

Can a linear amplifier ever be appropriate?
