A CB that suddenly whistles, screeches or howls can make a perfectly good radio sound faulty. If you are asking, why is my CB squealing, the noise is usually caused by audio feedback, RF getting where it should not be, an aerial system issue, or electrical interference from the vehicle. The key is to identify exactly when it happens: while receiving, only when transmitting, with the engine running, or whenever the microphone is connected.

Do not keep transmitting while the set is squealing, particularly if you suspect an aerial or SWR problem. A short test is useful. Repeated transmissions into a badly matched aerial system are not.

Why Is My CB Squealing When I Transmit?

A squeal that starts as soon as you press the PTT button is most often RF feedback. In plain terms, some of your transmitted signal is getting back into the radio, microphone lead, extension speaker or another part of the installation. The radio then re-amplifies it, creating the familiar high-pitched howl.

This is more likely with high microphone gain, a power microphone, an amplifier, a poorly positioned extension speaker, or a vehicle installation with untidy cable routing. It can also point to a poor aerial earth plane, a high SWR reading, or a bad connection in the coaxial lead.

Start with the simple checks. Turn the mic gain down to the middle, turn off any echo or talkback function, and disconnect external audio accessories one at a time. If the squeal stops when the extension speaker is unplugged, move the speaker farther from the microphone and check its lead and plug. If it stops with a power mic removed, inspect the mic wiring and use a lower gain setting.

Talkback and PA settings can sound like a fault

Some radios and accessories have talkback, which lets you hear your own voice through the speaker. Set too high, it can feed back just like a public-address system. The same applies if a PA speaker is selected by mistake or wired too close to the cab microphone. Check the radio’s controls and any switches on the rear panel before assuming the set needs repair.

Check SWR Before Blaming the Radio

If your CB squeals on transmit, especially alongside poor reports, reduced range or a hot radio, check the standing wave ratio. SWR tells you how well the aerial system is matched to the radio. A high reading means too much transmitted power is being reflected back rather than radiated by the aerial.

An SWR meter is not just an accessory for enthusiasts. It is one of the quickest ways to diagnose a new mobile installation, a changed aerial, or a fault that appeared after catching the whip on a branch, car park barrier or garage door.

With the meter connected correctly, test on the channels you normally use. A reading close to 1:1 is excellent. Around 1.5:1 is generally very workable. Once readings rise towards 2:1, stop and investigate before using high power or transmitting for long periods. If the reading is high across the band, look first at the mount, earth, coax and connectors. If it is low at one end of the band but high at the other, the aerial may need careful adjustment.

Never adjust an aerial by guesswork alone. Make a small change, re-test, and keep clear of the whip while transmitting.

Common aerial faults behind a squeal

Mobile CB aerials depend on more than the whip itself. The mount must make sound electrical contact with suitable metalwork where the aerial design requires it. Paint, powder coating, corrosion, rubber isolation washers in the wrong place and loose fittings can all compromise that connection.

Inspect the coaxial cable from radio to aerial. Look for crushed sections, sharp bends, water ingress, damaged insulation and a plug that can rotate or pull loose. Check that the centre pin and outer braid are correctly terminated, with no stray braid strands touching the centre conductor. A connector can look acceptable from outside while its soldered or crimped joint has failed inside.

For base-station users, check outdoor joints and the point where the cable enters the building. Water in coax can create unpredictable symptoms, including noise, weak signals and poor SWR. Replacing a suspect patch lead is often quicker than spending hours chasing an intermittent connection.

Squealing on Receive Is Usually an Audio or Noise Issue

A squeal that happens when you are not transmitting has a different set of likely causes. First, turn the volume down and then reduce the squelch. If the sound changes with the squelch control, you may simply be hearing a weak carrier, another station with audio feedback, or local electrical noise sitting near the threshold.

Try another channel. If the squeal is only on one channel and disappears elsewhere, it may not be your equipment at all. A nearby CB user can have a badly adjusted power mic, talkback or amplifier setup, and everyone within range will hear the result.

If the noise remains on every channel, remove any extension speaker, headphones or audio adaptor. A failing speaker, damaged lead or loose plug can produce shrill, distorted audio. Test with the radio’s internal speaker if it has one. If the problem disappears, the radio is likely fine and the external audio equipment needs attention.

Vehicle interference: engine running versus engine off

Run a useful comparison test with the vehicle parked safely. Listen with the ignition off, then with it on, then with the engine running. If the squeal or whine appears only when the engine runs and rises with engine speed, you are dealing with electrical interference rather than radio feedback.

Alternators, ignition systems, LED light bars, USB chargers, dash cameras, fridges and poorly suppressed accessories can all put noise onto the power supply or radiate it into the aerial lead. Modern vehicles can be particularly busy electrically, so the source is not always obvious.

Power the CB directly from the battery where practical, using a properly fused positive lead and a sound negative connection. Avoid sharing a noisy accessory feed or using a lightweight cigarette-lighter lead for a permanent installation. Keep the radio power cable away from ignition wiring and high-current accessory cables. If a particular accessory brings the noise back, switch it off and deal with that item rather than fitting filters at random.

A Sensible Fault-Finding Order

Changing several things at once makes faults harder to find. Work from the radio outward, testing after each step. Begin with low mic gain and all effects switched off. Remove external speakers, powered microphones and amplifiers. Then test the aerial system with an SWR meter and inspect the aerial mount, coax and plugs.

For a mobile setup, compare engine-off and engine-running conditions. For a homebase station, temporarily move the microphone and speaker farther apart, check the power supply output, and examine outdoor cable connections for moisture or corrosion. A regulated supply that is struggling under transmit load can cause odd audio behaviour, although it is less commonly the direct cause of a classic feedback squeal.

If possible, substitute one known-good item at a time: another microphone of the correct wiring, a different extension speaker, a short tested coax lead, or a known-good aerial system. This is far more useful than replacing the radio first. Microphone wiring is especially worth checking if a mic has recently been changed, repaired or fitted with an adaptor. Similar-looking plugs do not guarantee the same pin configuration.
